Course Content: Garrotin with Hat, Fandangos por Soleá with Shawl

The advanced level focuses mostly on choreography and performance skills, as well as on technique (speed, precision, interpretation)
This fall, we will learn a new Garrotin with Sombrero as well as a new Fandangos por Solea with shawl (later in the fall), both original choreographies developed for this class. We will start with the traditional and lively flamenco palo, "Garrotín," which is making a comeback, along with the Sombrero Cordobés! Often learned in beginner courses due to its straightforward compás, the Garrotín for this class will be quite a different ball game: we'll incorporate elements of improvisation and work with the hat with footwork-heavy, sections (intricate escobillas), contrasting with the "Fandangos por Soleá" we'll tackle later in the fall, which will center around the shawl . These are two great additions for this level, filling gaps in our current repertoire. A hat (sombrero cordobes) is required.

Shawl Technique

Shawl required. Please if you don't have a shawl, refer to my Shawl Guide and get yours ASAP.

The shawl technique teaches students the art of moving and holding the shawl, or "mantón". The class focuses on building upper body strength and mastering various sequences, such as turning and flipping the shawl. These skills are essential for effectively incorporating the shawl into dance. Students will learn to handle the shawl as an extension of their movements, gradually integrating these techniques into full choreographies.

Need a Shawl?

All you need to know is on my newly updated Shawl Guide. Including recommendations, prices and links. Ask around locally, some students or former dancers might have a shawl to lend to you or sell.
