Flamenco Level 2 - Progressive (Hybrid 🎦) 🍁

Level 2 - Flamenco Dance Course (Hybrid Course)

This course is tailored for students who have been pursuing flamenco dance for 3 years or more, typically attending classes once a week.
We will work on technique and develop an original choreography tailored specifically for this group as well as learn sevillanas (1/2 an hour at the start of the class and a separate module). This class is also an excellent opportunity for higher-level students wishing to refine their technique and interpretation and learn an additional choreography.

Course Content

The class starts with a 1/2 hour of beginner Sevillanas run by Karen Staples (optional for those who already know Sevillanas). After that, Maria will teach the following hour (hybrid) , focusing on technique and developing an original choreography for the "Tangos de la Repompa" as performed by the group "Las Migas." Known for their fusion of traditional flamenco with contemporary influences, Las Migas use this song to convey a timeless story of love and heartache. This heartfelt version encompasses the earthy flamenco palo along with dramatic sections, helping the class develop a grounded flamenco style and work on emotional depth and artistic expression. The class will also focus on continuing to develop footwork skills, increasing speed, and improving turn technique.

For New Students

To give you an idea of the skills of this group, most of the students in the class have been dancing for 2-4 years. During this time, the class has learned the following palos/choreographies: Tanguillos de Cadiz, Fandangos de Huelva, Alegrias (including escobilla and bulerias), as well as short tangos and bulerias sequences.

About the Tangos de la Repompa

Named after singer "La Repompa", these tangos have been cultivated through generations of talented, musically they have similarities to the "Tangos de Granada". This song is is named after singer La Repompa (Malaga, 1937) although the lyrics were actually created by La Pirula, born in 1915. La Repompa died young at 21 but left a lasting impact on flamenco music with her passionate voice, making this song famous and popular to the level that people associate them with her instead of the creator.

The version we will use for our new choreography is a recent version performed by the group: "Las Migas", whose name comes from "Las Amigas", meaning "The Girlfriends". This phenomenal all female quartet consists of Carolina Fernández (vocals), Marta Robles (guitar), Alicia Grillo (guitar), and Laura Pacios (violin). Their album "Libres" (free) won the "Best Flamenco Album" at the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards.

About Sevillanas

Sevillanas are a traditional folk dance from Seville, danced in pairs. It is a must-know dance for any flamenco student, often performed at fairs, festivals, and gatherings. At our school, Sevillanas are frequently showcased at various events, highlighting the vibrant and communal spirit of flamenco. The dance is structured in four parts, each with distinct steps and choreography, making it both a fun and essential part of flamenco culture and does hardly have any footwork, so it is quite accessible for all those wishing to learn. Maria has developed a comprehensive Sevillanas Tutorial that will help you through the fall.
