Level 1 - Absolute Beginner Course - Sevillanas

Beginner Course - Discover Flamenco and Learn Andalusia’s Iconic Dance

Think of Sevillanas as the Spanish version of square dancing — festive, social, and danced in pairs at community celebrations.

Although it's a partner dance, both dancers perform exactly the same steps. There are no "male" or "female" roles, and gender pairing is not relevant. In class, students rotate partners and everyone learns the full choreography.

An essential must-know dance at any flamenco event, Sevillanas are deeply rooted in Andalusian culture. In Seville and across southern Spain, thousands of people dance them every year at fairs and festivals. Learn it here in Halifax — and you'll be ready to dance it in Spain. No partner or previous experience required.

About This Course Structure

Sevillanas are choreography-based and learned in four traditional “coplas” (sections). Each week builds on the previous one, so the course is progressive by nature.

By registering for the full 11-week course, you’ll learn the dance in proper sequence, gain confidence with the music, and feel comfortable dancing it socially. Because the choreography is standard everywhere, once you know it, you can dance Sevillanas with anyone — in Halifax or in Spain.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothing and indoor shoes. No flamenco shoes required. Choose a dress-style shoe if possible.
Avoid thick rubber soles, sandals, open toes, wedges, stilettos, or very high heels.
